Webcam Setup Guide for Online Darts

Get your home setup ready for online darts in minutes. This guide covers everything you need — from camera positioning to lighting and troubleshooting.

What you need

Equipment checklist

  • Dartboard — Any standard bristle or electronic dartboard. Mount it at regulation height (173 cm to the bullseye center).
  • Darts — Your preferred set of steel tip or soft tip darts.
  • Camera — A webcam, smartphone, or tablet with a front-facing camera. 720p minimum, 1080p recommended.
  • Microphone — Built-in laptop/phone mic works fine. External mic is better for clear audio.
  • Internet — Stable broadband connection. 5 Mbps upload/download minimum. Wired ethernet is more reliable than WiFi.
  • Device — Laptop, desktop, tablet, or smartphone with a modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge).

Camera positioning

Get the right angle

Position your camera so that both the dartboard and the throwing area are visible. The ideal setup shows the board clearly and captures your throw motion.

  • Side angle — Place the camera to the side of the board, about 1.5-2 meters away, at board height. This gives a clear view of the board and your throws.
  • Behind the player — Camera behind your throwing shoulder, looking towards the board. Shows your throw and where the darts land.
  • Smartphone on a tripod — A simple phone tripod works great. Position it at board height, angled to capture both you and the board.

Lighting

Make your board visible

Good lighting is essential for a clear webcam feed. Your opponent and moderators need to see where your darts land.

  • Board lighting — A dartboard surround light or ring light eliminates shadows on the board face.
  • Avoid backlighting — Do not stand between a window and the camera. The board will appear dark.
  • Even lighting — Overhead room light plus a dedicated board light gives the best results.

Troubleshooting

Common issues and fixes

Camera not detected

Make sure your browser has permission to access the camera. Check browser settings → Privacy → Camera and allow access for the Moneydarts site.

Video is laggy or freezing

Close other tabs and applications using your camera or bandwidth. Switch from WiFi to ethernet if possible. Lower video quality in your camera settings if needed.

Opponent cannot hear me

Check that your microphone is not muted in the video call. Verify browser microphone permissions. Try a different microphone if available.

Board is too dark on camera

Add a dedicated board light. Even a desk lamp pointing at the board from the side makes a big difference. Avoid having the main light source behind you.

Device check fails

The platform checks camera, microphone, and network before your first match. If it fails, ensure all permissions are granted and your connection is stable (minimum 3 Mbps).

Setup complete?

Your board is lit, your camera is positioned, and your mic works. Time to play.
